I think this is a known bug with grub 0.90 (I assume you are using it, since
it is the default). The solution I took is :
- have a kernel with APM enabled;
- unmask grub 0.92 from package.mask;
- emerge update grub
- re-install grub (Warning menu.lst is now grub.conf, or something like
that, I'm not on my PC: just read the messages at the end of emerge process)
And everything should be fine after...
-ec

Subject: [gentoo-newbies] Shutdown issue
When I issue the "shutdown now" command, the system always hangs just after
"Unmounting network filesystems". I get the OK message from that command
but it doesn't go any further. Is this a power management issue? Do I need
to investigate some more what my motherboard uses for power management? I
think I compiled APM into the kernel, maybe I need to put ACPI instead?
BTW, if I do "Shutdown -r now" to reboot, or simply "reboot", everything's
fine. It's only when I want to actually shut down that this happens.
(I have an ASUS P7B-F motherboard w/a Pentium III-500MHz CPU)
