After you run env-update, it will give out this message because there is
no make.profile. That's ok.

When you emerge rsync one will be created, don't worry.

You have to emerge a flavor of the kernel, even the guide saying one
kernel should be there. I guess they decided to take the kernel off the
stage4 tarball and forgot to update the docs.

Simply follow the instructions to emerge one kernel flavor and do as
instructed.
