ok, i see :-)
when i look at my system i see that i'm using some 700 megabyte in 
/usr/portage/distfiles and about 2 gigabyte of systemfiles.
mostly X and kde and not yet completely installed. if you want to run a lot of 
servers on your system you need some more space.
just to give you an idea.

and since it's getting late here (almost 1 am) i'm starting to think about
the following: if linux wants to be *real* popular it needs more games.
maybe, the start of a long and interesting thread.
