USB Scanner?

I had my Epson U1240U USB scanner working under Gentoo 1.2 just fine.

Now I've reformatted and started over with 1.4.

I can't figure out what the magic words I used before under 1.2 to get this 
sucker to work.

I'm got every thing compiled as modules and loading ok, such as scanner, 
usbcore etc.

I know I need to do some thing to link the vendor/product id up with the USB 
stuff, but I don't remember where/how.

Ideas?
