Yes, I've did all of that.

USBVIEW shows that the scanner is out there.

I find no errors in dmesg or the boot messages.

I still think there is some thing I need to do to devs.

How does /dev/usb/scanner0 get created?

I've tried mkdir and mknod both ended up with the same nothing happening in 
the end.
