internet

I've gotten gentoo installed fine but, I can't get my Ethernet card set
up.  I  have a (according to Device Manager) SMC EZ Card 10/100 PCI
(SMC1211TX).  I went to rebuild the kernel and went to Network
devices--->10/100 devices (or something like that)--->and enabled
AMD/SMC cards.  I built it, etc, and rebooted.  I still had the same
problem (adsl-start would just output 15 '.' and say TIME OUT).  I went
back and disabled the last one and enabled SMC EtherFast II (further
down the list) and did the same, and of course, gentoo did the same.
When booting, just before login, it says:

*bringing up eth0
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device 
eth0: unknown interface: No such device 
SIOCSIF*: No such device 
eth0: unknown interface: No such device 
SIOCSIF*: No such device

How do I get my internet working?  I enabled the PPP support, PPP
support for async serial ports, PPP support for sync tty ports and the
compression options and PPP over Ethernet as modules.  Would those need
to be built into the kernel (I mean, not modules)?  Thanks for the help.
(Btw, I posted this in the newbies forum at forums.gento.org but, they
stopped responding)
