You're right, but in that case I'm not sure where you were going to put
the iso on the disk. If you want to do the whole thing from the hard disk
it's going to require some juggling, the details depend on how your
partitions are layed out at the moment. Plan B is to use a live system
that doesn't need a CD burner - Tom's Root and Boot[1] runs from a floppy,
and I think it has everything you need to install gentoo. Someone here's 
bound to know for sure though.
