Boot problem with Old World Mac

I ran through the entire build process using the ppc 2004.3 LiveCD. I
did a stage3 install and emerged the system.

My layout is:

/dev/hda1-6 Mac OS 9 related partitions
/dev/hda7 - 512meg swap partition
/dev/hda8 - 2 gig /var partition
/dev/hda9 - 52+ gig / partition

I ran mac-fdisk on the hda7-9 using the mkefs -j which made them ext3
partitions.

When I change my BootX setting to use root as /dev/hda9, I get errors
on loading the filesystems. It says that it cannot read the
Superblocks and that I need to run fsck on it. it also says something
about it not being an ext2 partition. My fstab has /dev/hda7-9 as ext3
partitions. I am using the stock G3G4 kernel that comes from the CD. I
did not recompile my own (do I have to?).

What is really strange is that when I try to run fsck on /dev/hda9, it
saus that /dev/hda9 cannot be found. I looked in /dev and there is no
hda9 in there, even though I get dropped into rescue mode using the
/dev/hda9 partition!

I amnot in front of the box now, but I can get a list of the errors if need be.

Any ideas?
