FWIW, my vote goes to hardware failure.  I one friend very happy with
his Maxtor drive and a couple more that had filesystem corruption with
their same Maxtor discs, including one with a thrashed file system (he
got his disc deemed replaceable by Maxtor).  All the 2.6 kernels I
have ever tried are rock solid in ext2 and ext3 access (I have never
experienced unexplained file system corruption) so chances are really
slim as far as I see things that your problems are caaused by
software.

I don't have any Maxtor so don't take me more seriously than
necessary.
