 Gentoo's "Alternative Installation Guide" has some info on installing from
an existing Linux system.

 I know nothing about it, but maybe build a customized LiveCD using
Catalyst?  That's just a shot in the dark, though.  :)

 With an even goofier laptop than yours, that would only boot from a floppy,
I was forced to use "netcat" to push the output of tar across a LAN in
order to get a Stage 1 tarball extracted.  Let's hope you don't have to go
to such lengths.  :D

 From what you've said, I think the chroot method may be the easiest way to
go.
