If you are getting the errors on multiple CDs and they are working on other burners, then I am leaning away from the media. Also the HP 8x is a rock solid burner. I have one myself and never had any problems with even cheapo media. I am out of ideas here. Let me clarify something: if it is not an Apple factory drive (I don't think they ever shipped HPs), then checking Apple's site is a waste of time. You are brining these in Gentoo? What program are you using? Is there a Simulation Mode? Does that succeed? If Sim Mode succeeds,, this usually indicates a media issue. Of course, that goes back to the first paragraph, which I just proceeded to contradict. Don't happen to have another machine you can burn using that HP drive with? Sorry I was not more help.
