Was hindert dich also daran, das Paket mit -qt4 (so wie unten gezeigt, oder 
besser in der /etc/portage/package.mask) zu installieren?
Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen das VLC dann ohne GUI gebaut wird.

Im Zweifelsfall heisst es dann: Versuch macht klug;-)
Aber im Grunde ist das ja nicht dein Kernproblem...
