OK.  I finally had a chance to reboot.  I had to update another package 
and things like Firefox were needing to restart plus some that I'd need 
to logout for anyway.  So, rebooted.

Still no console.  When I switched, monitors went into standby and then 
switched off a few seconds later.

This is the options for the kernel right now.

That look right?  Any other ideas?  Do I need to get my sledge hammer???
