That did it.  I upgraded to gentoo-sources 6.18.19 and the console works 
now.  It could be a config error in the old kernel, a bug or nvidia 
drivers just doesn't like that kernel anymore.  I dunno.  As in other 
reply, if one is interested, I'd be happy to dig a little more to figure 
it out.  Just rebooting and such may take a bit.
