Note that running a wayland session is different from compiling with
USE=3Dwayland, e.g. all binary distros usually compile with exclusively
their equivalent of USE=3D"X wayland" in order to support both types of u=
ser.

On Gentoo, these USE flags exist to allow disabling features you aren't
using, thus trimming install size / compile times, which is not the same
as "needing to disable wayland in order to use X".

It is a *potential* valid solution to "just get things working by
compiling wayland annyway".

tl;dr mutter requires wayland but honestly if you cannot use wayland I'm
surprised you use GNOME at all. They are very aggressive about dropping
X support in code.
