I'm seeing something very similar, though for me the login prompt tends
to get displayed 4 or 5 times (it varies).

Yes.  It's one of those annoying things which isn't sufficiently severe
to prompt urgent intervention, yet nevertheless annoys quite a lot.

There was an update to sys-apps/openrc-0.63.3 on 2026-07-23, which was a
week and a half ago.  This might be something to do with it.
