Trusted Gentoo
--------------
 =20
Initially suggested by Joseph Pingenot[1], the members of Gentoo's crypto=
=20
herd have set the goal of Trusted Computing Group (TCG - formerly known a=
s=20
Trusted Computing Platform Alliance or TCPA[2]) support in Gentoo on the=20
agenda for the year.=20
 1. http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3D35574
 2. http://www.research.ibm.com/gsal/tcpa/
=20
TCG is an open standard for hardware specification defining cryptographic=
=20
functions (Trusted Platform Module - TPM) that keep private keys away fro=
m=20
system memory. The hardware also provides trusted boot functions (TCG=20
Software Stack - TSS) that ensure private keys cannot be used if the=20
operating system changes to an untrusted one.=20
=20
TSS applications of the TCG architectures that would be desireable for=20
Gentoo are:=20
=20
 * trusted kernel execution (http://enforcer.sourceforge.net/[3],=20
http://trousers.sourceforge.net/[4] =20
 * trusted grub execution[5] =20
 * trusted kernel modules=20
 3. http://enforcer.sourceforge.net/
 4. http://trousers.sourceforge.net/
 5. http://www.prosec.rub.de/trusted_grub.html
=20
TPM allows storing of cryptographic keys in hardware rather than placing=20
private keys on the filesystem. Examples include:=20
=20
 * unlocking of encrypted filesystems=20
 * OpenSSH server=20
 * SElinux[6] =20
 * Apache=20
 * OpenCA certification authorities[7] =20
 * GnuPG and SSH keychains=20

=20
If you are interested in donating hardware or undertaking development in=20
this area contact Henrik Brix Andersen[8] or Peter Johanson[9]. Developer=
s=20
will need to work largely independantly, and to have a good understanding=
=20
of security architectures and C coding. A TPM emulator that may be of=20
assistance is available[10].=20

Looking for EM64T developers, hardware, and AMD64 "Arch-testers"
----------------------------------------------------------------
 =20
The Gentoo/AMD64 team has issued a request for developers who could help=20
extending support to Intel's x86-64 processors, the EM64T product line.=20
The devs will need to bring their own hardware and mainly do kernel=20
testing, since the chipsets on EM64T mainboards are different. Please=20
contact Jason Huebel[11] if you feel up to helping out with this.=20
 11. [email protected]
=20
In a separate announcement[12], AMD64 is also looking for "Arch-testers"=20
or AT's, i.e. non-developers to help iron out bugs and mark applications=20
stable for a variety of ebuilds already available.=20

Gentoo/PPC GameCD released
--------------------------
 =20
The PPC team has prototyped the first completely graphical LiveCD for the=
=20
PowerPC platform featuring a 3D multiplayer OpenGL/SDL game called=20
Cube[13]. Designed for the PegasosPPC, a CD variant to run on Macintosh=20
hardware is already in the works. While the 198 MB GameCD is already=20
available for download from the mirrors (in the experimental/ppc/livecd=20
directory), a whole cluster of ODWs running Cube will be part of the=20
presentations in the Gentoo developer room at FOSDEM[14] in Brussels,=20
26-27 February 2005.=20

Project goals for 2005
----------------------
 =20
Continuing our coverage of goals set by projects inside Gentoo Linux, thi=
s=20
week we look at the plans of the Hardened group:=20
=20
Hardened
=20
 * Review of current approach and policies =20
 * Improvement of CFLAGS filtering (especially "-fPIC" and=20
"-fstack-protector"=20
 * Introduce AMD64/Sparc64/PPC64 stages, more hardware in the future as=20
hardware is aquired=20
 * Improved Grsecurity2 documentation=20
 * Improved and extended SELinux support=20
 * Develop and document RSBAC policies=20
 * More and better documentation of everything=20
 * Assimilate new developers=20
 * Elect new Hardened Committee=20
 * Introduce a forensics and rescue LiveCD=20
 * Support and improve kernel patchsets=20
 * Promote the Gentoo Hardened Project outside of Gentoo and raise=20
awareness within Gentoo=20

New old Portage utility

One of several Portage search utilities, portagedb, has been renamed to=20
"Ebuild Index" or eix recently. Developer Pythonhead acknowledges that=20

Is the beagle man's best friend?
=20
Slow week in the English sections of the Forums, but the French had a go=20
at a piece of software comparable to the much-hyped SpotLight[28] that=20
Apple wants to integrate into their Tiger release of Mac OS X. It appears=
=20
that the Mono-based Beagle[29] is not only a completely free Linux=20
alternative to Apple's real time desktop search, it's also already usable=
,=20
at least to a certain degree...=20

Reminder on the ebuild upgrade policy
=20
Jason Wever[31] sent out a reminder about ebuild upgrade policy:=20
"Recently, there have been a lot of ebuild upgrades with arch keywords=20
getting dropped completely. Please do not do this unless there is a=20
specific reason for it (security bug, broken dependencies, see policy),=20
and if there is a valid reason, please notify the affected arches as to=20
why you have dropped their keywords."=20

[RFC] Versioned eclasses
=20
Daniel Goller[33] and Patrick Lauer[34] started a thread asking for=20
versioned eclasses. This proposal (which is a recurring topic every six=20
months or so) was burnt to a crisp in one of the largest flamewars the=20
gentoo-dev mailing list has seen in the last months, and remained=20
unsolved.=20

=20
Around the same time as the "versioned eclasses" flamewar a second=20
high-traffic thread developed around signatures, identity and paranoia.=20
The initial questions around possibly broken signatures got forgotten=20
while devs and users discussed the problem of identity in mostly=20
electronical communications and some other tangential questions.=20

"Mixed feelings" best describe the open-source community's assessment of=20
Sun's OpenSolaris release. Regardless whether they're critical of Sun's=20
