Gentoo News =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D =20 Python 2.4 to be unmasked ------------------------- =20 Bryan =C3=98stergaard (see below for his portrait) announces that python-= 2.4=20 will be unmasked on Wednesday, 8 June. It's been masked for a long time t= o=20 allow for proper testing and bugfixing. The Python herd members are now=20 confident that there are no major bugs left. Details of what's new in=20 Python-2.4 can be found at the official Python website[1].=20 1. http://www.python.org/doc/2.4/whatsnew/whatsnew24.html =20 Please note that only ~arch users will be affected by the unmasking, and=20 please remember to run the python-updater after updating Python to remerg= e=20 all modules as neccessary.=20 =20 Busybox glitch contained ------------------------ =20 As some of you may have noticed, the "rescue shell" was changed from sash= =20 to busybox a few days ago. This was motivated by the extra features and=20 the extensibility of busybox, but on some systems it has lead to compile=20 failures. Since busybox is now part of "system", it was emerged on every=20 update, so all users were potentially affected.=20 =20 After some debugging the problem was identified as a bug in the stable=20 toolchain related to the nptl and nptlonly USE flags which had been=20 overlooked during the original testing. It is triggered by busybox being=20 built as a static binary - if it isn't, it can't be used for recovery.=20 This has been fixed now as far as we can tell. Future zone =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D =20 Gentoo for Zaurus ----------------- =20 Figure 2.1: `emerge -B cpio` on a Sharp Zaurus http://www.gentoo.org/images/gwn/20050606_zaurus.png =20 The Gentoo for Zaurus[2] project is a port of Gentoo Linux and Portage in= =20 particular to the Zaurus family of PDAs from Japanese manufacturer Sharp.= =20 It is based on Anton Maslovsky's "cacko ROM", a replacement image for=20 Sharp's own Linux implementation shipping with the various Zauri. Cacko=20 ROM[3] tries to stay as close as possible to Sharp's original ROMs for=20 maximum compatibility with the applications distributed by the=20 manufacturer. Gentoo for Zaurus also makes use of the Emerde project[4],=20 offering a Portage port for Slackware and other distributions.=20 2. gentooforzaurus.opensistemas.com 3. http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/ 4. http://emerde.freaknet.org/ =20 Gentoo for Zaurus can be mounted over NFS so no changes to a current=20 configuration are needed. It includes a native gcc environment for ARM,=20 the zgcc-3.3.1 cross compiler for the main PC, and X11 for testing=20 applications. Most importantly, Opensistemas has developed a tool called=20 tbz2ipk that converts Gentoo binaries from .tbz2 files to the Itsy Packag= e=20 management system format (.ipk) widely used on the Zaurus and other=20 handhelds running Linux. Packages that have been compiled on Gentoo can=20 thus be used on both Qtopia-based implementations such as Cacko or even=20 the original Sharp ROMS, or more losely related alternative distributions= =20 like OpenZaurus.=20 =20 The project was started in December 2003. Gentoo was chosen due to its=20 "compile all" nature (whcih helped a lot in porting), and because it=20 seemed like the right thing to do. Since compiling needs lots of space an= =20 NFS mount of external disks is usually needed, but the new Zaurus SL-C300= 0=20 (with a 4GB disk) could theoretically do everything locally. However,=20 because the Zaurus is comparatively slow (featuring ARM Xscale processors= =20 currently maxing out at 400Mhz) a distcc setup is preconfigured.=20 =20 Opensistemas is providing hardware and people to support Gentoo/ARM as=20 well as they can. They anticipate a release of Gentoo for Zaurus sometime= =20 around July if nothing goes terribly wrong. Among the new features will b= e=20 a 2.6 kernel and a new glibc. Some additional documentation can be found=20 at the OpenEmbedded website[5] (the successor to the Openzaurus=20 distribution). If all goes as planned most core packages should be workin= g=20 well near the end of the year, and maybe ARM will be a fully supported=20 architecture in Gentoo again.=20 5. http://www.openembedded.org =20 Note: The Spanish consultancy Opensistemas recently announced a move to=20 open the source of all their developments, not just Gentoo for Zaurus. Bugdays are organized each first=20 Saturday of a month, when users and developers gather in an IRC channel=20 that has been set aside for this purpose (#gentoo-bugday on=20 irc.freenode.net), and spend the day tackling whatever problems have=20 accumulated over the month.=20 6. He manages to keep a healthy balance between maintaining ebuilds=20 on his own, and enjoying lots of opportunities to meet new people on IRC=20 during bugdays.=20 =20 After finishing Advanced Computer Studies in 1999 kloeri[8] has been=20 self-employed, working mostly as a network and server administrator, but=20 he also does security and development work when needed. Like most other=20 featured devs before him, kloeri has not worked much on other OSS project= s=20 yet, but he enjoys improving Gentoo (and especially Gentoo/Alpha).
