have You tried to do

unset LANG
for var in $(set | grep ^LC_ | cut -d = -f 1); do
 unset $var
done
export LC_ALL=C
update_firmware --yes

?

We had some strange behaviour with "update_firmware" and "*.BIN" files
when running with LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 etc...
Would be interested to hear about Your "locale" output before running
"unset LANG; ..." commands, if those lead to successful execution of
dell_dup_componentid_00196.
