My HD is louder also. I have installed RH7.3 and Gentoo. No difference.
Apparently you can set hdparm in some fashion to make less noise, but it
could 1: wreck your drive, or 2: reduce HD performance. The last
discussion I remember about this was about 9 months ago on this list.
