Andy, you may well go down as one of the legends of the Vaio ether.

I have spent the last week insuccessfully trying to build a new kernel using 
2.4.20-18.9 but I believe i am close. Just a quick question ... did you patch 
the kernel using acpi-20021212-2.4.20.diff before you compiled the now famous 
ajg4 kernel? If so, this is one place where I may have been going wrong as I 
am assuming that the new kernels have acpi modules in the code.
