Sony always publishes the limit as the highest configuration of
memory they sell.  Even if the motherboard will accept larger
memory modules they don't sell it that way so they just say
the limit is whatever they sell.

My machine came with a limit of 512meg
yet I am running 768meg now.

I'm feel fairly sure that your machine would work
with 640meg, or maybe higher.
