Well you have been right twice, although ACPI support and overheating
are unconnected events:

a) Some dust in the CPU fan made the laptops overheat. Applying an
external fan helped a bit. Opening the laptop and cleaning away the dust
seems to have cured my problems under load.

b) Switching to ACPI made the crashes during idle states go away, as
ACPI on the FX201 doesn't even support going to sleep ;)
