Your using the RELEASED version of WHO's Kernel?
Vanila?  RedHat?

Googling for:   
   sonypi "ec_write" 
would have yielded a wealth of info on this subject.  I believe
your sonypi source is too old.   
Stelian is the author, and thre are many references to this in
google.

I won't address the built-into-the-kernel question because
this module has no business in the kernel.
