If you are just learning about linux, you should use whatever
the Linux you are installing comes with as its prefered standard.
It will be better integrated than will the other.  The trend is 
toward alsa, but there is a large trend toward artsd (which runs
on top of your underlaying sound system) for sound multi-tasking.

And if you are just learning, go buy a boxed set of the latest
release of what ever distro you prefer, rather than using someone's
old hand-me-down because the new ones are way better than
the old ones for hardware detection in laptops.
