Well, if midi works your sound system must be somewhat functional. Check volume controls using whatever mixer you have to be sure the channels are not muted. What software do you attempt tp play sounds with? Many (most?) sony laptops do not have the analog sound output from the cdrom connected to the motherboard, so you have to use a digital cdaudio input.
