Thanks Tom, I have installed Gentoo in vmware as a test (havn't got X working properly with it yet), before moving onto my vaio. I have read the kernel building info on the install page, but I don't know enough about kernel building to tell if the gentoo-sources + patches are based on 2.4 or 2.5-pre code. I have had some limited success with the 2.5-pre kernel in RedHat.
