The latest gentoo-sources are based on 2.4.20 with some patches applied.

To find out what the latest version of each kernel source package is go to
this webpage:

http://www.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/gentoo-x86/sys-kernel/

Click on the source package you're interested in (e.g. vanilla-sources for
the official releases) and the version should be apparent from the files in
the directory you see.
