I have tried SuSE 8.0, 8.1, and Mandrake 9.1 and all lock my systems when I try to use the alsa sound system with the via686 soundcard in the vaio. I recently tried 4front tech. drivers to no avail either.

No soap on vx88 with Mandrake 9.1 -- I've seen debian users get it going
successfully using homebrew kernels, but I'm sticking with Mandrake
kernels for a number of other reasons. Based on the progress I see at
the swsusp list I lurk on, I'd expect that Mandrake 9.2 will have no
problems.
