realized as the thread went along that it was an AMD via686 setup, so my
i810 Vaio stuff isn't entirely accurate, but since I've got three
via686-based desktops I can say that the sndconfig trick works there
too.

So Mandrake's auto-setup doohickey is failing to load the right driver,
is my guess. lsmod show drivers? Do they say unused?
