Over-ride the rpm installer to force a new directory on the source.
Of course then the make utils need you to hack the /usr/src/linux
link each time you want to switch.

If you just want to keep a back up kernel (but not the source)
is easier, just copy the bzimage and rename as per the
manual.

BTW, if a kernal install goes bad, you can recover from
the SuSE cd/dvd as they have a rescue mode.  The one time
a Mantel kernel wasn't up to snuff, I booted with the cd
into rescue mode and the installed --oldpackage the
original kernal which was good enough to get me going
again.  Had I saved the old bzimage I would not have
needed that.   (blush).
