Remembering brightness over reboot

Hello,

It seems you can make your bios remember your brighness over
a reboot with linux. By increasing or decreasing the value at
offset 2f of /dev/nvram.

I am wondering if there are any programs that have been written
for manipulating the bios like this in linux. eg. like the sony 
app in windows thats called "Sony Notebook Setup".
