Thats pretty funny, I noticed the same thing on my PCG-GRV550 when I went into 
power-saving mode under windows. After that every time I rebooted into linux, 
I had to run spicctrl. Fixed it by rebooting into windows and resetting the 
brightness, then I removed windows. No more problems ;).
