So thank you very much Jack and everyone else on my sony vaio sound woes.

First to prevent my soundcard from locking when I used it, I did in fact have to turn on acpi. However, I notice now my laptop doesn't turn itself off automatically anymore. Plus whatever laptop power management I used to have doesn't exist anymore. In Mandrake 9.1, there is a big red 'X' over the battery (any tips???).

Second, I tried the alsa drivers. Something funky was going on and it was loading an opti93X function to try and get sound going, although alsa correctly identified I had a via 82c686 driver.

THus, I went to www.opensound.com, where you have to pay a small fee ($20 I think...haven't paid yet) for the drivers they work on (however you get something like a 30 minute trial once you install the drivers on the computer).

I had to do a 'chkconfig --del alsa' then 'rm /dev/mixer* /dev/dsp* /dev/audio* /dev/midi* /dev/sndstat /dev/sequencer' and re-booted my laptop before I really got the oss drivers from 4Front working.

So, I now have sound for: mp3's, audio cd's, and linux games (for mandrake 9.1, 'Power Manga'). This is more than SuSE 8.0, 8.1, where I was only able to get mp3's going (but I didn't try www.opensound.com them).

I STILL DO NOT have internet sound. Like, if you go to m-w.com and click on the pronounciation for 'cathode', I don't hear anything. I also tried a noisy website, joecartoon.com, no dice.

Any ideas??

Thanks,

Jay
