Sam machine - same problem.  
You should be able to go into your XF86config and comment
out the ps2 mouse section and try it.  Occasionally I've had
to use the touch pad (its really a pretty good touch pad) when
I forgot my usb mouse.  So I wouldn't delete the ps2 entries
in xf86config file all together.

Note that I'm half convinced that there are some instances
where these phanotm mouse events just happens at random
because they happen even when I'm "pretty sure" that 
I never got near the touch pad.
