Well if you got lots of time and patience the sf.net patches
are one way, but If yo get tired of that mess and are looking
for a Sony-Friendly Distro look into SuSE 8.2.  It will run
that machine perfectly out of the box - ( you might have
manually select hfslinmodem package, I can't recall).
