I read a slashdot article reciently that mentioned that having one
11b card connected to the dual-mode APs slows everybody down
to the slowest speed of the slowest card.  If if that 11b is far
away and has a marginal connection everybody suffers.

I would see if you can configure the AP for only 11g.
