I really hope that it's soon. I know that on my laptop that when I've got it running at full resolution (1400x1050 @ 24 bit) the DRI doesn't startup and therefore it won't get any hardware acceleration at all for OpenGL. Lower bit depths are of course lower and I do some (not a lot) but some graphics work on the system and can't stand anything less than 24 if there is no compelling reason. One the flip side the XiGraphics X engine does drive it at full acceleration at full resolution, but I personally run into other issues from my not so standard to them configuration(s) that I put my laptop into. Besides if I'm not using XFree then I can't use fun programs like MPlayer or similar that rely on XFree hooks that aren't part of the defined X standard *sigh*. Has anyone tried to use the ati.2 drivers from the Gatos project? Supposedly they are better, but as they aren't in any of the install packages and I don't want to try and beat them into working I haven't tried. -Andy-
