Don't know, I'm a SuSE user and have not had this problem.

SuSE uses oss, and pipes all kde sounds thru artsd to multitask
the sound card.  With that combination I have never needed alsa
and, quite frankly, never found it any better than oss on any
machine I've tried it on.
