If you have not found the answer yet: Yes, they do work.  In SuSE releases 
prior to 8.1, you needed to add a memory stick patch, but 8.1 and 8.2 
support them automagically provided you load usb-storage.  I can't really 
speak for other distros however, but basically if the memstick patch is not 
applied to the source, you will not have much luck.  Oh, and don't forget 
ACPI, since that is needed too... <g>

Your next question will be what it maps to... Well, that will depend 
entirely on your hardware setup.  I have both a parallel port Zip drive and 
a USB Floppy connected to my laptop (GR390), and between them, the memory 
stick and the DVD/CD-RW, the device address may not be the same as what you 
get.  rescan-scsi-bus.sh should help there...
