Well I don't know if it applies to your Vaio, but I have not seen any
Desktop machine that shuts down its fans. And some of the modules that ACPI
loads are laptop oriented, like battery.

In your case it appears that the computer does not have thermal control and
thus module thermal cant get loaded.

OTH, I may be completely wrong.

I've got a Sony VAIO RX650 Desktop running Mandrake Linux 9.1

The fans wouldn't shut off, and ACPI couldn't handle my system with the
stock kernel, so I grabbed a fresh kernel, patched in the correct ACPI (and
supermount) patch for the version (2.4.21).

ACPI loads fine, and so does the ACPI daemon. It shows up on the lsmod, and
I don't see any error messages in the dmesg for ACPI. I heard that
installing ACPI rids me of this problem, but it doesn't. In fact, ACPI
doesn't seem to be detecting anything on my computer at all. /proc/acpi
shows very little. In fact, /proc/acpi shows only my CPU clock speed, and
empty directories for everything else.

An acpi -V command only shows:
No support for device type: thermal

Does anyone have any information or a me-too that would be useful to me?
This is really a thorn in my side.
