Mandrake 9.1 has good ACPI support, you just needed to turn it on. Edit
/etc/lilo.conf and change acpi=off to acpi=on.

lsmod should show all of these:

button                  3756   0 (unused)
thermal                 8256   0 (unused)
processor              10904   0 [thermal]
fan                     2560   0 (unused)
ac                      2816   0 (unused)
battery                 7040   0 (unused)

if it doesn't, try modprobe to insert them.
