I actually know this issue from a Sony VAIO. Apperently in these it is related to broken capacitors in the power supply for the backlight. With the VAIO's the problem started on battery (the lower the battery capacity the worse the issue), and gets to a point where without constant power connection the screen always flickers. The solution there is to change out the backlight electronics Not sure if the issue is the same in Thinkpads, but it sounds very similar.
