[tlinux-users:07282] Toshiba Satellite Pro 470CDT

Hi,

First post to the list, subscribed at the start of September.

I've had success with this laptop using linux, though it took a while to
find a distro that would do anything.  Hardware problems were sound
(audio chipset generally wasn't found) and the PCMCIA card detection
done too late (it's a Xircom 10 Mb card).

What did work:
1. SuSE Personal 9.1.
   Slow with KDE, but it recognised the sound chipset (Yamaha OPL
something) and the PCMCIA network adapter.
   Ok with fvwm2, but I wanted to try something with a smaller
footprint.
   This was the first distro I tried that would enable the PCMCIA card
before starting eth0, thereby giving me network.
2. Vector Linux 4.0 Live CD.
   With this distro, I also completely wiped the partitions and started
fresh, as it wanted a Swap.
   Enabled PCMCIA before network
3. Zenwalk Linux, which is what will probably stay on there.
   XFC4 desktop, not always incredibly fast but quite workable.
   There seems to be something odd happening in a terminal, as I can't
do any editing in vi.
   It doesn't detect sound, lspci doesn't show it and I can't modprobe
the audio module (fatal error).
   Also, didn't do dependency checking and adding a new user wouldn't
work due to a missing library (esound) - I ended up doing an install
with everything.
   Enabled PCMCIA before network.

What didn't work:
1. Knoppix, a version current from this year.
   It hangs early in the detection process.
2. Mandrake Move 9.0.
   Took a long time to get to package install, then seems to spin the CD
drive up and down for a few hours without doing anything apparent.
   I gave up ;)
3. Damn Small Linux 1.2.
   Apparently workable with a floppy.
4. Vector Linux normal install.

Damn Small Linux is Knoppix based (which is in turn debian based),
Vector Linux and Zenwalk are both Slackware based.

Question - why is the font so wide on the list archive ?
I see the character set is ISO-2022-JP.
