If nobody here can help you, I would recommend to ask people working in 
hdparm. Honestly, I would take this path. Grab a Knoppix or Ubuntu Live 
and check with hdparm that the DVD has DMA (or can be set). If the 
LiveCD works, report this as a bug in my distribution and check what the 
maintainer says. If there is no way to get DMA, then I will try with 
another computer, WindowsXP, MacOSX, or technical service shop, whatever 
to make sure it is working correctly. If it is working then the error is 
in hdparm or in linux kernel, so go to their mailing lists and ask there 
in the hope that someone will have 5 minutes for answer you.

Or you can look for someone who provides paid technical support and pay 
them.
