IIRC, you *may* have to tell the HDD controller chipset to use / allow UDMA.

This is a very vague memory .. but there may be a switch for hdparm that 
will do this for you. A quick scan of the man page suggests you may need 
to use -c and -X, but I bear no repsonsibility for whatever you may do 
to your disc.

Sorry - this suggestion may not be much use, but somewhere in my 
imperfect memory I have the feeling that enabling UDMA is a two part 
process .. controller and HDD.
