I think Suse is not even trying to configure the modem module. Without 
the proper module, nothing else will work. I am sorry, I cannot identify 
the proper module by myself, you should look for someone more expert.

One option is the developers of Suse[1], since their software should 
detect the module. If it doesn't (as it seems), it is a bug and they 
will be glad to know about it.

I would suggest to try the scanModem tool by following the instructions 
given by linmodems[2]. If you write to their mailing list, please CC us, 
so people can follow your progress (or even better, make a summary and 
send it to our mail list).
