Well, does SUSE claim to support softmodems, coz I
thought most distros wouldn't ?

That's the systematic way to do it (Though it might be
guessing, but you've got nothing to lose...)

I got following (Sat1900-101[build2002])
which *might* have some similarity (means might be
compatible with same linmodem):
root@slackware:~# lspci | grep -i modem
00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corp. Intel 537 [82801BA/BAM
AC'97 Modem] (rev 05)
