I've got a 5105-S501 Toshiba that I salvaged off the scrap heap a year or so ago. It was overheating and had cooked a couple batteries and a hard drive. On investigation, I found that this had been a chronic problem for this model a couple years earlier and traced to some non-communication between the BIOS and the CPU, the result being that the fan wouldn't turn on. Toshiba had issued a BIOS revision that, once installed, cured the problem. So take a peek at the web site with your model number handy and make sure that's up to date.
