I think that you have to actually try an installation to see how it went, then look for extra tweaks, etc. The most important part fof this,I think, is to have the experience of doing the installation in your laptop. It is my recommendation for you to get the distro you want to use (im in ubuntu; everything fine so far --wireless, ethernet,etc. Printers not tested yet--), and install it.
